Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories

AT-X 2013

Akin to TV Tokyo’s Folktales from Japan, Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories takes a narrative format to explore the rich occult history from Japan, moreover, the storytelling techniques in this brand new series will mimic kamishibai – a traditional storytelling technique inspired by the artistic usage of paper figures and scrolls.“Yamishibai is a picture-story style of animation whose motif is surrounded and based off the rumors, and urban legends throughout the history of Japan.”

You can get the gist of the show by it's title: Yami Shibai - Japanese Ghost Stories. The episodes are no longer than four minutes and always self contained. Most of them come down to your typical J-horror setup/sequences. Like many short shows the budget for these is small. The way they handle it here is employing a picture-story style with little animation which works for me. Horror seems to be one of the hardest things to do in animation or at least I don't really know of something scary in the field (that is not going the cruel/gore route à la Corpse Party). Some of the episodes are fun to watch for the creepy vibe but there are also weak ones among them. I'd say if you like J-horror and got some minutes to spare you will enjoy it. (The two ED's so far have been great btw., I really like the dark/distorted vocaloid songs.)

About Me

I am Sophie and this is my website.

A little about me 👋 I am a marketing student in Paris. I love spending afternoons with friends in a cafe or a park.

But more than anything else, I love watching (.. binging…) series on my computer on rainy Sundays or any sunny day for that matter 🙈

I must have watched hundreds of shows by now, from romance to science-fiction series. Often I like to go back to a show I enjoyed. But I don’t feel like watching it all over again…

I created this website so myself and others could find the best episodes of our favourite shows. As of today, I have about 1,000 shows on the website with votes and rating coming from fans.

Hopefully, you can join me from your sofa and enjoy some nice TV!
