The setting is contemporary, judging by the automobiles, but the ambience is decidedly 1950's era spy film noir. As for genre, I'm forced to call Counterpart science fiction, in that it involves parallel universes, but it's really like nothing else within that genre. The general scenario is this: 30 years ago, for reasons unknown, reality split into two bifurcating, independent time lines. Until that point, all was unified, meaning that every character alive at that point shared identical histories. Now, things have begun to diverge. But there is a doorway between the universes in a building in Berlin. Again, for reasons unknown, the two sides have been both communicating with, and spying on, one another through this doorway, and this is where our protagonist Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) comes in. "Our" Howard is a low level functionary in this spy agency who hasn't a clue as to what is really going on until, one day, his counterpart arrives with news that a woman from "their" side has been sent over to assassinate people on "our" side, including Howard's comatose wife. No one knows why, which is the prevailing state of awareness in this decidedly curious story. "Other" Howard decides that "our" Howard is critical to his investigation and, thus, the strange alliance begins. J.K. Simmons is a phenomenal actor, despite often being cast in secondary roles, and Counterpart is truly his opportunity to shine. He plays a single character, but one with two separate backgrounds despite shared childhoods, a role requiring some subtlety and nuance. He plays both characters to perfection as the similarities and differences between the two create something of a broader character that calls into question our notions of identity. In a way, Counterpart is an examination of the concept of self, or soul, but it is also an engaging mystery/thriller. Like its main character, the sum is both greater than, and equal to, its parts.
awesome fully enjoying this - love the twist im addicted !!
Mindbogglingly boring. I am a huge scifi fan, I love almost everything in the scifi and fantasy genre. So of course I was looking forward to this, two parallel worlds where the protagonists meet and interact, how cool is that premise? Turns out it wasn't, isn't nor will be cool or even interesting. It was dull, forseeable and an utter piece of crap. Do yourself a favor and just skip this one.
Fantastic show, refreshing from the usual US produced TV drivel.
This series has earned a spot in my "Top TV Series" list. It is a spy thriller with a SciFi premise. However, once the premise is established in the first episode it is all spy story from there on. There is a dark 50s bureaucratic vibe to the production and the action is a slow reveal. Fantastic international cast (J.K. Simmons, Olivia Williams, Nazanin Boniadi, Ulrich Thomson, Sara Serraiocco), the acting is superb and the mystery is captivating. Some great themes, like, "How much of who I am is dependent on circumstance rather than character?" I've upped my rating of this series from a 9 (superb) to a 10 (totally in) out of 10. [Spy Thriller]
jk simmons, you are the real deal. sad that this show didn't receive more traction.
Counterpart is an unusual genre, somewhere between Man in the high castle, and Altered Carbon, but it is definitely one of my favorite show so far in 2018
Not sure why I kept watching. I guess I was expecting it to get good. They waste an interesting concept and under two seasons not really much happens. The seasons could've been compressed into one season.
"Twin Cities" i.e. the parallel Earth and the first meeting of the managements should've been episode 6/7 S1.
The terrorists and security/agents/police seem to be idiots concerning tactics and abilities depending on where they want the plot to go.
A little complicated. But the background music is well furnished.
GOOD series, but you have to be willing to pay attention, there’s a lot going on in season 1
Watching royalty can sometimes make us feel like we are a part of royalty, but it also shows that being a leader usually isn’t as easy as it could seem. So, if you want to experience a lot of unpredictable drama with stunning scenery, clothes and visuals in general, these may be a few good choices for you:
Lately, I’ve been re-watching a lot of tv shows I used to watch growing up. Even though it makes perfect sense, I was really surprised how different was my point of view now, than it was ten or fifteen years ago. Suddenly, my favorite characters aren’t the favorites anymore. Besides, I’ve forgotten tons of what was happening, that’s why I had so much fun re-watching everything. I highly suggest you do the same thing!
Mixing reality shows and food seems like the perfect combination for just about anyone. I always get amazed what some people are able to make under a huge amount of pressure. The cooking shows are so entertaining as well, because it’s always regular people competing. Just make sure not to watch them on an empty stomach!
I am Sophie and this is my website.
A little about me 👋 I am a marketing student in Paris. I love spending afternoons with friends in a cafe or a park.
But more than anything else, I love watching (.. binging…) series on my computer on rainy Sundays or any sunny day for that matter 🙈
I must have watched hundreds of shows by now, from romance to science-fiction series. Often I like to go back to a show I enjoyed. But I don’t feel like watching it all over again…
I created this website so myself and others could find the best episodes of our favourite shows. As of today, I have about 1,000 shows on the website with votes and rating coming from fans.
Hopefully, you can join me from your sofa and enjoy some nice TV!
