So, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland create this particular animated series, that gets quite famous. They need a ridicolous amount of time writing new episodes despite a 70 episode deal they got at one point and I am sure they will never be able to deliver upon just by how much time they need for ten episodes. Then Justin has the "idea" of doing his own animated series that's copying Rick and Morty basically, just without Rick and Morty and without multiverse? Timeline is important here, Wikipedia says, the series was shelved but not for how long. The art style is the exact same, the randomness and over the top stories are the same, several voices are the same, all that this is lacking is good writing. Solar Opposites, funny name considering the not so much "opposites", is airing on another network. In other words going into competition to R&M. Is this a very elaborate prank from DH and/or JR, even though DH isn't mentioned? Or does Justin want to piss of DH? How's this even legal from a business standpoint? SO does scratch the R&M itch. But it's nowhere near the greatness of R&M. SO doesn't try as hard, though. There's almost no continuity. The stories of the main characters are so random, as random as any interdimensional cable episode, there's no point in watching. You could watch any episode in any order you wish, without losing or missing anything regarding the main characters. That makes this series incredibly boring for me personally. The most interesting subplot, with actual continuity so far that needs a certain episode order, is "The Wall". That part is the best part of this whole season 1 and really a good idea with actual fun, consistent characters. If
Cherie
survives for revenge in S2 it would make me gladly come back. Other than that I don't particularly care for this to get a second season. If JR wants to do R&M, he should focus on R&M and push Harmon (and all the other writers) to do more, instead of half-assing his own stuff. Other than that I simply fail to understand why this exists other than to leech off of the success of R&M. Creating an instance of "you like R&M? You must like this, too. It's from one of the creators". But no. I do not like this. I don't hate it, but I certainly do not like it. Would this not rely on so many similarities or be a direct and open spin-off I wouldn't mind, though. Kristen Schaal should have been cast as the voice of Jesse as well. Mary Mack sounds way too much like her and Schaal's voice would fit that character very well.

It certainly lacks Harmon's story telling, but I liked it, it's filled with Roiland's chaotic energy.

Not your typical show yet a hillarious, delirious, extremely hysterical, at times insanely violent animation. Another monstrous creation from the mind of Justin Rolland that is just as chaotic, dark and meta as Rick and Morty! Filled with glorious references, all-stars guest voices and dramatic musical cues that only make the show better, Solar Opposites is just a triumph for streaming animation.

Yeah, can't really complain with this one besides always hearing Rick when Korvo opens his mouth. (And that Adam Goldberg kid....) But besides that? Entertaining and chaotic stuff that will fill the void when Rick & Morty goes on another prolonged hiatus or somesuch. Especially the last two episodes of the first season were stellar and make me cross my fingers for another season.

S01E07 and any moment about The Wall were by far the stand out parts of the first season.

avatar

Definitely not as good as Rick and Morty. But it does have its own charm. If you like Rick and Morty you'll most likely enjoy this but to a lesser extent.

If you've ever wondered what part of _Rick and Morty_ is Roiland's and which is Harmond's, just watch this show. While it showcases Roiland's manic improv, it lacks the character introspection and pathos that made _Rick and Morty_ a success. Without Harmond's guidance, there's just not much to root for about the alien family. Typically some random shit happens, then things go from bad to worse because aliens. None of them are particularly likable. Some gags are fine but on the whole it all feels pretty skippable.

Nothing much present here is interesting. This is what R&M would be if it's animation, themes, characters and writing was worse. Nothing is funny nor does it explore the extreme ideas R&M does. I don't want to compare these shows but if you watch it both are trying to do the same thing this is just worse tho. I'm not invested in any other story except The Wall and even then its filled with clichés. And the animation is really dull even tho it copies R&M which looks good enough.

I feel, like so many animated series, Solar Opposites simply needs a bit of time to find its rhythm. When the jokes don’t hit or the references don’t connect, I find myself considering how much potential the show has. Too many productions get cut off at the legs because their premiere season didn’t fire on all cylinders from the first episode. Watch the show. Let Hulu bank the ratings. Let it go. I bet it will come back with a stellar, more refined second season.

Solar Opposites starts out as a series that has a clear story, and a clear objective in mind. It knows what it wants to show the viewer, and when. As each episode goes, characters get a bit more fleshed out. Each characters has a nice development arc throughout the series. By the end, I can truly say I know these characters, and what they stand for. I wish I could say the same for the story of the series. What starts out as a very clear storyline, becomes muddled with side stories which add nothing to the objective. Don't get me wrong, the series is worth watching, as I hope my rating suggests. But the main story got lost somewhere on the road, and all we got were discrete episodes, each developing characters, but not the main story itself. Frankly, I started enjoying the
tiny people side story
much more than the main story, and it felt that much more important. I'm sure it was not meant to be that way, but
the people fighting for the WALL
took the spotlight. The show is not very funny, but it's a good way to spend 3 hours if you have time to kill. The ads sprinkled throughout the series left a bitter taste in my mouth, but nothing that you can't get over. Should you watch it? Yes, but maybe temper your expectations, and you may be in for a surprise.

About Me

I am Sophie and this is my website.

A little about me 👋 I am a marketing student in Paris. I love spending afternoons with friends in a cafe or a park.

But more than anything else, I love watching (.. binging…) series on my computer on rainy Sundays or any sunny day for that matter 🙈

I must have watched hundreds of shows by now, from romance to science-fiction series. Often I like to go back to a show I enjoyed. But I don’t feel like watching it all over again…

I created this website so myself and others could find the best episodes of our favourite shows. As of today, I have about 1,000 shows on the website with votes and rating coming from fans.

Hopefully, you can join me from your sofa and enjoy some nice TV!
